LONG-TERM CARE
Long-term care expenses represent a significant financial risk for the elderly. Most residents face an average stay of two to three years. Long-term care is extremely expensive: the average rate for a semi-private room in a nursing home in the Golden Triangle area was over $50,000.00 per year in 2015. A three-year stay will cost approximately $165,000.00, not counting ancillary supplies or prescription drugs.
Many spouses cannot afford to support themselves and pay the nursing home. Fortunately, the law recognizes this and there are numerous spousal impoverishment provisions of which an experienced elder law attorney is aware. Many cannot afford to go without help.
- Medicare coverage is limited to rehabilitation.
- The VA could provide some financial help, but rarely is that help enough to cover the cost of long-term care.
- Limited resources prevent private pay for very long.
- Families can only help so much, providing care or funding is a drain on their own families and resources.
- Only 10% have long-term care insurance.
Eligibility is far more complicated than what most anticipate. There is no public education system that provides advice on how to qualify at the earliest time possible with the maximum savings of assets. An experienced Elder Law Attorney is needed. The Mayo Law Firm can help. Call (409) 781-4114 for an appointment today.
